The workplace coaching resource
COMPANY | OUR HISTORY

More about InsideOut, the workplace coaching resource.

Twenty five years ago, a young psychologist working with up-and-coming tennis and golf professionals made an unsettling discovery.

In the process of coaching his clients to the next level, he determined that many accepted methods for improving human performance not only didn't work but did more harm than good.

He found that once individuals had achieved a certain performance standard, piling on additional information and instruction was more of a distraction than a help. That traditional measures like pep talks, voice-of-experience advice and even "constructive" criticism were likely to be tuned out or misconstrued. That true improvements in performance could only be realized once an individual was put in a receptive and focused frame of mind.

In other words, performance improvement could only come from the inside out.

From these early insights about how people learn and perform under pressure, Alan Fine went on to develop a widely acclaimed performance coaching model and start up the leading firm in the coaching sciences field, InsideOut Development LLC.

Along the way came the discovery that sinking a 30-foot putt isn't a whole lot different than closing a major sale or managing a cross-functional project team. So it wasn't long before InsideOut methods were embraced by dozens of industry leaders including IBM, Pharmacia & Upjohn, Campbells Soup, Alcon Labs, CitiGroup, KPMG, Proctor & Gamble, Merrill Lynch, Texas Instruments as an essential catalyst to help them:

  • get training programs applied on the job

The new leadership paradigm

"Coaching is destined to be the leadership approach of the 21st century. Yesterday's leader was a decision maker and resource allocator who asked how to best exploit an employee's abilities for the organization's gain. Employees were seen as tools and resources for accomplishing the organization's goals. Today’s leader is a people developer and relationship builder who asks, 'How can I help this person become more valuable as an individual - as well as to all of us?' Today's leader is a coach."

- James A. Belasco
