What is the GROW® Model?
Three colleagues Alan Fine, John Whitmore, and Graham Alexander developed the original
GROW Model over twenty-five years ago. The basic GROW Model is an acronym for the four
stages of decision making and is considered today by many executive coaches worldwide to be a
gold-standard framework for structuring coaching conversations.
components of any decision-making process:
|G:||The “Goal” the individual seeks to achieve|
|R:||The “Realities” a person should consider in the context of the decision process|
|O:||The “Options” open to the decision-maker|
|W:||The “Way Forward” – a specific action plan that maximizes the precision and proactivity of the GROW Model|
The Business Impact of the GROW Model
Over the past 20 years, Alan Fine and the InsideOut Development Team have made significant
enhancements to the original GROW Model, including the term “Way Forward” as the fourth step in
the GROW process.
The GROW Model has evolved into a universally applicable model for tapping into and focusing human
potential. Tens of thousands of people around the world use this best-in-class performance model each
year to develop personally and professionally. Business tested by Fortune 500 companies like IBM,
Coca-Cola, and Procter & Gamble, the GROW Model is a powerful tool that enables both
individuals and organizations to effectively make faster and more accurate decisions, and increase and sustain performance.
The enhanced GROW Model is the sole property of InsideOut Development and has been integrated into our
training and coaching programs, application tools, job aids, and other original content.
The GROW conversation… It involved the whole office and allowed everyone’s ideas to be heard. It took a large and unwieldy topic and focused us on the goal.
