Business Issue:
PacifiCorp is one of the nation’s lowest cost electricity producers and a strong proponent of continuous improvement and learning. A key objective for 2004 was to continue to improve employee engagement and satisfaction levels.

InsideOut Solution:
PacifiCorp engaged InsideOut Development to deliver a one-day leadership forum to more than 100 key managers and executives.

This highly participative learning experience provided managers with the knowledge and skills to improve their ability to lead, coach, and communicate with employees. In addition, they were introduced to a new model for performance and decision making and enjoyed an opportunity to share leadership experiences and learn from each other.

Surveyed once they were back on the job, participants reported that the skills they had learned had proved useful in:

• setting performance expectations and mapping out plans for improving performance with both union and non union employees
• inspiring individuals and teams to come up with breakthroughs in safety practices
• building cross departmental teamwork and decisionmaking
• working with customers to improve communications around service issues
• encouraging employees to abide company policies such as safety rest periods and cell phone use

Six months later, PacifiCorp and InsideOut Development teamed up to develop a reinforcement CD that also introduced new applications of the skills and linked the content more closely to the PacifiCorp annual performance management process.
